Amherst Sweeps Bridgewater State and Brandeis in Hall of Fame Tourney

AMHERST, MA - Amherst College swept a pair of matches over Bridgewater State and Brandeis College in the first round of the ninth annual Volleyball Hall of Fame Tournament on Friday night at LeFrak Gymnasium.

The homestanding Firedogs dominated Bridgewater State 15-4, 15-1 and 15-1 in the opener, as sophomore middle hitter Erin Dittus (Brentwood, TN) christened game-one with five consecutive service aces and finished with six for the match. Sophomore middle hitter Emily Ratcliff (Storrs, CT) added a match-high eight kills, taking advantage of 10 assist performance by junior setter Meredith DeMeules (Los Angeles, CA). Sophomore defensive specialist Missy Mordy (Issaquah, WA) also had a team-high eight digs.

The nightcap brought similar results as Amherst shut down Brandeis 15-9, 15-7, 17-15. The Firedogs battled back from a 14-10 deficit in game-three and fought off three game-points on Brandeis' serve. Dittus finally sealed game-three and the match and with a right-handed kill off a nifty assist from DeMeules, her 41st of the match. Junior outside hitter Erica Hewes (Woodside, CA) led the way with 14 kills, while Dittus had 11 and Ratcliff added 10 kills and 20 digs. Amherst improved to 20-3 with the pair of wins, while Brandeis fell to 20-9 with the loss.

In other tournament matches, Brandeis defeated Tufts 15-10, 16-14, 9-15, 15-8, and Tufts downed Bridgewater State 15-10, 4-15, 15-6 and 15-9. Tournament action will commence Saturday at Smith and Mount Holyoke Colleges.
