Firedogs Continue Roll With Three-Match Sweep of NESCAC Quad at Trinity
October 7, 2000

HARTFORD, Connecticut It would have been difficult for the Amherst womenıs volleyball team to turn in a more impressive performance in their three-match NESCAC round-robin at Trinity College this weekend. With a trio of three-game sweeps of host Trinity, Connecticut College and Wesleyan University, the Firedogs continued their dominating run through the 2000 regular season, improving to 16-1 for the year.

Friday night in the round-robin opener, the Firedogs made quick work of host Trinity. After a hard-fought 15-13 first-game win, Amherst quickly dispatched of the hosts, cruising to 15-2 game wins in each of the next two games for the three-game match sweep.

Saturday morning, Amherst continued its stellar play, dominating Connecticut College with game scores of 15-3, 15-1 and 15-0. Junior setter Meredith DeMeules (Los Angeles, CA) had 13 assists against the Camels, while sophomore outside hitter Erin Dittus (Brentwood, TN) led the attack with six kills.

The Firedogs saved their best performance for last, however, dominating Wesleyan in the Saturday afternoon finale, 15-9, 15-9 and 15-7, avenging their lone loss of the season, a five-game heartbreaker at the M.I.T. Invitational on September 23. This time around, DeMeules and classmate Erica Hewes (Woodside, CA) led the Jeffs to the sweep. Hewes posted a match-high 13 kills to pace the Firedogs, and DeMeules added 25 assists and six kills, one off her career high. Dittus posted five kills in the match, while rookie Lauren Wong (San Francisco, CA) capped off an impressive weekend with four kills. For the weekend, DeMeules posted 59 assists and 12 kills, as the Firedogs outscored their three opponents 135-46.

Amherst (16-1, 7-0 NESCAC) is next in action next weekend, when they travel to Middlebury College for another NESCAC round-robin.
