up another outstanding season
SAN ANTONIO, TX - The top-seeded Amherst College women's tennis team fell to third-seeded Emory University, 7-2, in the third place match at the NCAA Division III Championships at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas on Sunday. With the loss, Amherst finished its season at 16-4 and placed fourth in the nation for the third time in four consecutive Final Four appearances.

It was a long morning for Amherst, fresh off a heartbreaking 5-4 loss to defending national champion Trinity in the NCAA semifinals on Saturday. Junior Stephanie Fong (Los Altos, CA) posted the lone Amherst singles win, 6-2, 1-6, 6-2, over Emory's Julia Jacobs. Defending national singles champion Jamie Cohen (Rye, NY) paired with Amherst junior teammate Vass Kozoulina (New York, NY) to salvage the Jeffs' lone doubles victory in a tie-breaker, 9-8 (7-1), over Mary Ellen Gordon and Anusha Natarajan.

Unfortunately for the Jeffs, Emory dominated the rest of the draw, claiming five out of six singles matches and two out of three doubles matches to run away with a third place finish. Gordon atoned for her doubles loss with a key 6-2, 6-4 singles win over Cohen, while Jacobs rebounded from her singles loss, teaming with Margaret Moscato for a 9-8 (7-1) doubles win over Amherst sophomore Susanna Burke (St. Louis, MO) and senior co-captain Carolyn Pastel (Old Lyme, CT). Emily Warburg and Jennifer Meyer also won singles matches for Emory and posted a doubles victory over Fong and Amherst junior Heather Cole (Baltimore, MD), 8-6.

Despite the loss, Amherst wrapped up another outstanding season. After downing then top-ranked Trinity 8-1 in their third match of the spring, the Jeffs claimed the top spot in the Wingspanbank.com ITA rankings, hosted first and second round matches in the NCAA New England Regional and earned the top-seed heading into their NCAA quarterfinal win over the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

Cohen and Fong will resume action in the 32-player individual singles championships on Monday. Fong and Cole also qualified as alternates in the individual doubles competition.
