NCAA Regional
ITA Northeast Player of
the Year Jamie Cohen '01
AMHERST, MA - Amherst College women's tennis player Jamie Cohen (Rye, NY) was named the Northeast Senior Player of the Year by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association on Wednesday after leading the Jeffs to their fourth consecutive trip to the NCAA Quarterfinals, which begin this Friday at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas.

Cohen, who earned NESCAC Player of the Year honors earlier this season, is the defending national singles champion and a favorite to repeat at this year's tournament. She was also a key member of the 1999 women's tennis squad that stands as the only Amherst team to ever win a national championship in any sport.

"Winning this award is a great honor for Amherst women's tennis and a testament to Jamie's hard work and determination," said Amherst head coach Jackie Bagwell. "She's a great competitor who never gives up."

Cohen was tabbed a 2000 Rolex Collegiate All-Star as a junior after finishing the season with a 30-2 overall record, including singles and doubles titles at the New England and Rolex East Championships. She also led Amherst to a 14-6 record and a fourth place finish in the NCAA Final Four Team Championship - Amherst's third consecutive Final Four appearance.

Fresh off its 7-2 win against visiting NESCAC rival Wesleyan University in Sunday's regional semifinals, Amherst earned the number-one seed in this year's NCAA quarterfinals and will face the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Friday at 9 a.m. Williams College, Emory University, and host Trinity picked up the other three seeds in the eight-team quarterfinal round, and the winner of the Amherst/UWEC match will face the winner of the Trinity/Washington & Lee contest in Saturday's Final Four.
