Middlebury Overwhelms Men's Soccer in 3-0 Final
October 7, 2000

MIDDLEBURY, Vermont Despite being outshot by visiting Amherst College, 14-12, the Middlebury College men's soccer team used goals in the 29th, 40th and 66th minutes to overwhelm the Jeffs, cruising to the 3-0 shutout in Saturday's NESCAC battle.

After a back-and-forth first 25 minutes, Middlebury attacker Conor Shapiro settled a long ball deep on the wing in the Amherst zone, before crossing a pass to Pat Saunders. Saunders headed the ball past junior Amherst keeper Bill Orum (Greenwich, CT), giving Middlebury a 1-0 lead.

The Panthers quickly extended their lead, scoring 10 minutes later off a Sergey Cherednichenko free kick from just outside the 18. Cherednichenko chipped a shot just between a leaping Orum and the bottom of the crossbar, building a two-goal lead for the hosts heading into halftime.

The Jeffs rallied in the second half behind striker Dave Michener (Eden Prairie, MN) and midfielder Franklin Perry (Hartford, CT), but could not get anything past Panther goalie Brian Hamm, who posted three of his five saves in the second period.

21 minutes after halftime, the hosts put the game away, after Kyle Dezotell put home the rebound from a Saunders shot that had deflected off the post for his team-leading fifth goal of the season. The Jeffs had a couple of chances late, but were unable to break into the scoring column.

With the win, the Panthers improve to 5-1-2 (3-1-1 NESCAC), while the Jeffs fall to 5-3-1 (3-3 NESCAC). Amherst is next in action on Wednesday when they travel to Norton, Mass., to battle Wheaton College, before their showdown next Saturday at home against arch-rival Williams College, the number-one team in the nation in the latest NSCAA poll.
