Amherst Football 2000 Milestones
Team Accomplishments:
1) 7-1 record (finished in three-way tie for NESCAC Championship with Middlebury, Colby)
2) Won first outright Little Three Championship since 1986 (decided annually between Amherst, Williams and Wesleyan)
3) Beat Williams (20-12) for the fist time since 1986
4) Ranked fourth in the final ECAC New England Region Poll
5) Ranked 27th in the nation in rushing defense (86.8 ypg)
6) 22nd in pass efficiency defense (85.8)
7) 17th in total defense (233.1 ypg)
8) Fifth in scoring defense (8.8 ppg)
9) 43rd in turnover margin (.87)


Individual Accomplishments:
1) Senior defensive back Brian Daoust (Dover, MA):
*Tabbed First-Team All-NESCAC, New England Sports Writers All-Region Division II-III, Third-Team D3football.com All-American, and Football Gazette First Team Division III East Region
*First-Team All-ECAC selection
*NESCAC Co-Defensive Player of the Week and Coca-Cola Gold Helmet Award winner for Nov. 11, after leading the Jeffs to a 20-12 win over Williams with three interceptions
*Finished his career with a school-record 17 interceptions in four seasons as a starter and two as a tri-captain
*Voted the team's most valuable player


2) Junior running back Okey Ugwonali (Dallas, TX):
*Tabbed First-Team All-NESCAC and Football Gazette Third Team Division III East Region
*NESCAC Offensive Player of the Week for the period ending Oct. 28 after rushing for a season-high 151 yards on 32 carries and scoring the lone touchdown in an 8-0 win over Tufts
*Finished third in the NESCAC in rushing with 856 yards on 156 carries (107.0 yds/gm)
*Second in the NESCAC with six rushing touchdowns

*Ranked 49th in the nation in rushing with 104.1 yds. per game
*Voted the team's co-offensive back of the year


3) Senior free safety Dave Frankel (New York, NY):
*Tabbed Second-Team All-NESCAC
*NESCAC Co-Defensive Player of the Week for Saturday, Oct. 21, after posting a career-high 12 tackles, a punt block and an interception in a 9-7 win at Wesleyan
*Voted the team's defensive back of the year


4) Junior defensive tackle Pat McGee (Marshfield, MA):
*Tabbed First-Team All-NESCAC and Second-Team All-ECAC
*NESCAC Defensive Player of the Week for the period ending Oct. 14 after leading the Jeffs to a 28-14 victory over previously-unbeaten Colby College. Had four sacks and a game-high 10 tackles, including four unassisted and five for loss (29 yards)
*Awarded the team's Hammer Award


5) Junior wide receiver Derrell Wright (Hudson, OH):
*Named First-Team All-NESCAC at two different positions (wide receiver & punt returner)
*School record 91-yard touchdown reception from senior quarterback Peter Honig in 28-14 win over previously-undefeated Colby College on Oct. 14
*Third leading receiver in the NESCAC with 39 catches for 640 yards (16.4 yds/rec)
*Led the NESCAC with seven receiving touchdowns
*Voted the team's co-offensive back of the year


6) Senior quarterback Peter Honig (Bronxville, NY):
*Tabbed Second-Team All-NESCAC
*Second leading passer in the NESCAC with 92 completions for 1,251 yards (52.3%) and 10 touchdowns
*School record 91-yard touchdown pass to junior wide receiver Derrell Wright in 28-14 win over previously undefeated Colby College on Oct. 14
*Voted the team's most valuable player of the Williams game


7) Junior linebacker Dan Lalli (Watertown, MA):
*Tabbed First-Team All-NESCAC and Second-Team All-ECAC
*Voted the team's co-defensive lineman of the year


8) Senior defensive lineman Ted Hollo (Aurora, CO):
*Tabbed Second-Team All-NESCAC
*Voted the team's co-defensive lineman of the year


8) Senior offensive lineman Mike Somerville (Hinsdale, IL):
*Tabbed Second-Team All-NESCAC
*Voted the team's most valuable offensive lineman of the year


9) Sophomore offensive lineman Rob Vernicek (Mountville, NJ):
*Tabbed Second-Team All-NESCAC

10) Junior linebacker Gregg Stankewicz (Portland, CT):
*Tabbed Second-Team All-NESCAC

11) Junior defensive lineman Brad Hensley (Cincinnati, OH):
*NESCAC Fall All-Academic

12) Junior tight end Matt Flavin (Littleton, CO):
*NESCAC Fall All-Academic

13) Sophomore full-back Jeff Ryan (Belmont, MA):
*Voted the team's co-offensive back of the year

14) Senior linebacker Will Knapik (Barrington, IL):
*Awarded the team's Friends of Amherst Award

15) Senior defensive-back Joe Larkin (Burlington, VT):
*Awarded the team's Friends of Amherst Award

16) Sophomore defensive-back Jay Hutchins (Columbus, OH):
*Awarded the team's Hammer Award

17) Senior linebacker Ken Barrington (Lighthouse Point, FL):
*Voted the team's most improved player

18) Freshman tight end Alex Popp (Walpole, MA):
*Voted the team's rookie of the year
