Jeffs Drop Thriller to Trinity, 3-2
October 24, 2006
AMHERST, MA – The Amherst College volleyball team played against NESCAC rival Trinity College at LeFrak Gymnasium on Tuesday evening, in a match which saw the two schools play a thriller on Amherst’s last regular season home match of the year. Trinity took the first game before Amherst rattled off two straight, but the Bantams answered to force a game five, where they edged out the Jeffs, 15-13.
Amherst dropped the first game of the evening 30-28, after being locked at both 26 and 28 with the Bantams, before cranking up their potent offense for a 30-21 win in game two, and a 30-24 win in game three. The Bantams came out firing in games four and five, winning 30-21 in game four, before the tight final game.
Tonight’s match was as close as possible, with the fifth game all but needing extra points to decide the match. On what was ultimately a discouraging last regular season home game, senior co-captain Kristin Quinn (Pacific Palisades, CA) shined again, racking up 19 kills and eight blocks. Amherst’s other senior co-captain, Laura Golden (Boca Raton, FL), had four aces and a dozen digs, while Whitney Kouvaris (Jacksonville, FL) smacked home 15 kills.
The Bantams were led in the upset by the combination of Nicole Cahill (Quincy, MA) and Vanessa Forero (Bedford, NY) who each tallied 15 kills, and combined for 4 blocks.
Amherst returns to action this Friday when they will travel to visiting NESCAC rival Hamilton College for a match-up at 8:00 p.m.
