Jeffs Lose to MIT 3-0, But Beat Williams 3-1
October 21, 2006
NORTHAMPTON, MA - The Amherst College volleyball team lost 3-0 to the MIT Engineers - its first shutout loss of the season - but recovered with a 3-1 drubbing of Williams College during day two of the Hall of Fame tournament, hosted by Smith College. With the 3-1 tournament record, the Jeffs improve to 22-3 overall.
Once again, senior co-captain hitter Kristin Quinn (Pacific Palisades, CA) led the way for Amherst; she racked up 42 kills in the two matches. Sophomore setter Sarah Heller (La Canada, CA) had another great weekend, dishing out 82 assists on the day while leading her team to a third-place finish in the tournament.
While Amherst lost its semifinal match to MIT, the Jeffs avenged last week's loss to NESCAC archrival Williams. Amherst stands as the only team to topple both Williams and Tufts University this season. Williams, Amherst and Tufts sit on top of the conference standings with a pivotal NESCAC Quad slated at Hamilton College on Friday and Saturday.
With their outstanding play over the weekend, Quinn and first-year defensive specialist Bethany Belisle (Austin, TX) were two of 11 student-athletes named to the All-Tournament Team.
Amherst returns to action Tuesday, when it hosts visiting Trinity College in a non-conference matchup at 7:00 p.m.
