Jeffs Win Five-Game Marathon Over Tufts

October 7, 2006

AMHERST, MA – The Amherst women’s volleyball team eked out a five-game win over visiting Tufts University Saturday, 30-21, 30-26, 24-30, 23-30, 15-5. The NESCAC win bumps the Jeffs up to 15-1 (2-1 NESCAC). The loss took the Jumbos to 12-6 (1-1 NESCAC).

Amherst showed up strong in the first game – the Jeffs led the whole way, although Tufts challenged at times. Tufts found its rhythm in the second game, pulling ahead of Amherst for the first time at 13-15. Amherst tied the score at 17 and again at 22, before opening up a 25-22 Jeff lead, and grabbing the momentum with an offensive onslaught – Amherst posted 17 kills in the second game alone.

Tufts and Amherst battled for the lead in the third game; the Jumbos eventually grabbed the lead at 21-23, and never looked back. The fourth game also saw a lot of momentum shifts, until Tufts slammed the door at 22-26.

Amherst, though, took over again in the fifth game – sophomore setter Sara Heller (La Canada, CA) started off the game with four straight service aces. Amherst never dropped the lead in the final frame, taking the five-game win in just under three hours.

Amherst junior hitter Jaclyn DeMais (Hillsdale, NJ) had a day for the Jeffs – she posted 17 kills, 30 digs, and three solo blocks on the afternoon. Senior co-captain hitter Kristin Quinn (Pacific Palisades, CA) notched 16 kills and 9 digs. Heller and junior defensive specialist Julie Berkley (Fullerton, CA) patrolled the backcourt, posting 23 and 27 digs, respectively.

The Jeffs return to action Sunday at noon, when they host Bates College in a non-conference match-up.
