Jeffs Go Undefeated at Wesleyan Invitational

September 30, 2006

MIDDLETOWN, CT –The Amherst College volleyball team spent the weekend racking up victories at Wesleyan College, going 3-0 in the Wesleyan Invitational to improve to an impressive 14-1 (NESCAC, 4-1) on the season.

The Jeffs rode the strong offensive play of senior co-captain Kristin Quinn (Pacific Palisades, CA) and junior hitter Jacyln DeMais (Hillsdale, NJ), who relied on the virtually prefect setting of sophomore Sara Heller (La Canada, CA).

In the opening match of the tournament, Amherst avenged their only loss of the season as they beat NESCAC rival, and tournament host, Wesleyan College in three straight 30-23, 30-27, 30-18. The Jeffs followed that up with another conference victory over Trinity College, who gave them a run for their money in a five-game match.  Closing out the weekend on a successful note, they returned to typical form as they swept Wheaton College in convincing fashion, posting scores of 30-9, 30-9, and 30-12.

Quinn and DeMais absolutely pounded the opposition posting 41 and 44 kills, respectively, by tournament’s end.  Quinn also posted a team-high 11 blocks through the three matches, further demonstrating her versatility and presence as a defensive force at the net.  Amherst’s offensive superstars couldn’t have done it without the light touch of Heller, who dished out 110 assists in the three victories.

At the tournament's end, both Quinn and DeMais were named to the Wesleyan Invitational All-Tournament Team.

Amherst will enjoy a nice week off before taking the court again next Saturday as they host NESCAC rival Tufts University at 12 p.m. at LeFrak Gymnasium.
