Jeffs Win Pair in Amherst Classic
September 22, 2006
AMHERST, MA – The Amherst College volleyball team downed Westfield State College 3-0 in the opening match of the Amherst Volleyball Classic tonight, while Johnson & Wales University handed Brandeis University a 3-1 loss. In later action, the Jeffs dominated Brandeis with a convincing 3-1 win, and Middlebury College defeated Westfield State University 3-1.
The Jeffs made easy work of the Owls of Westfield State taking three straight games on the way to their first win of the tournament. Senior co-captain Kristin Quinn (Pacific Palisades, CA) powered the explosive Amherst offensive, pounding the Owls with 16 kills on her way to posting an impressive .640 hitting percentage. On the defensive end, junior hitter Jaclyn DeMais (Hillsdale, NJ) logged 11 digs and 4 blocks in the Jeffs’ victory.
The second match of the night got off to a shaky start for the Jeffs, as they dropped a 32-30 game to the Brandeis University Judges. The loss seemed to fuel the fire for Amherst, however, as they bounced back securing three comfortable victories to take the match. DeMais led the offensive posting 13 kills and 5 aces. Also joining DeMais in double digit kills were Quinn and junior Whitney Kouvaris (Jacksonville, FL), who each notched 12. Claire Holton-Basaldua (San Rafael, CA) and Sara Heller (La Canada, CA) also looked solid with 8 and 5 kills, respectively; Heller also posted a team high 35 assists.
Amherst returns to action in day two of the tournament tomorrow morning. The first match is set to tip off at 10 a.m. and the second begins at 3 p.m.
