Jeffs Fall to Wesleyan in Five Game Heartbreaker

AMHERST, MA –The Amherst College volleyball team dropped its first match of the season on Saturday, falling short to NESCAC and Little Three rival Wesleyan University. Wesleyan beat Amherst, 30-23, 22-30, 22-30, 33-31, 16-14 in a wild match with several lead and momentum changes. With the loss, the host Lord Jeffs stand at 5-1. Wesleyan moved to 4-1.

Amherst junior outside hitter Jaclyn DeMais (Hillsdale, NJ) paced the Jeffs with 22 kills and 14 digs. Senior co-captain Kristin Quinn (Pacific Palisades, CA) made her mark with 16 kills, carrying home a blistering .343 kill percentage on the day. Meanwhile, junior Julie Berkley (Fullerton, CA) led the Jeff defense with 16 digs. Sophomore Hannah Wirth (Pacific Palisades, CA) patrolled the net for Amherst, having her say with seven blocks on the afternoon.

Wesleyan  powerhouses Lisa Drennan (Ann Arbor, MI) and Rebecca Rodger (Long Beach, NY) came out of the chute with all cylinders firing. Drennan knocked down 30 kills for the Cardinals, and also picked up 15 digs. Rodger made good on 18 kills, and Tory Molnar (Pasadena, CA) added 23 digs to Wesleyan’s total.

In other NESCAC Quad action, Tufts University beat Trinity College three games to one.

Amherst returns to action Tuesday night, when they host Emerson College.
