Jeffs Defeat Williams, 7-2

October 7, 2006

AMHERST, MA – The Amherst College women’s tennis team dominated Williams College Saturday afternoon, winning five of six singles matches.  Senior co-captain Katie Hudson (Los Altos, CA) and juniors Jennifer Murphy (Simsbury, CT) and Laura Stein (Rockport, ME ) won in straight sets, while junior Monica Snyder (Newton, MA) and  first-year Brittany Berckes (Secaucus, NJ) each won in three sets.

In doubles play, the Amherst women won two of three matches. Down early, Berckes and junior standout Alicia Menezes (Staten Island, NY) traded breaks with their opponents to knot up at 3-3 before eventually winning the match 8-6.  Although Snyder and Hudson lost 8-1, the match was in fact a nailbiter, decided on long rallies and close misses. In the third slot, Stein and Murphy controlled most of their match to win 8-4.

Amherst returns to action Friday, Oct. 20 to host the New England Tournament.
