AMHERST, MA - The Amherst College women’s tennis team placed two players on the All-Conference Team for the 2006-07 season. Junior Alicia Menezes (Staten Island, NY) and first-year Brittany Berckes (Secaucus, NJ) came away with First Team plaudits, with Menezes earning singles and doubles recognition and Berckes receiving recognition in doubles. As a rookie, Berckes was also named to the Second Team for her play in singles competition.
Menezes compiled an overall individual record of 13-10 while earning First Team All-Conference plaudits for the first time in her career. She also achieved First Team Doubles All-Conference recognition for 2006-07 alongside playing partner Berckes. Throughout her career at Amherst, Menezes has been very successful, earning various distinctions for her singles and doubles play. Most notably, Menezes was named to the Doubles All-America team for Division III in 2005-06.
Amherst rookie Berckes was named to the Second Team All-NESCAC for her individual performance this season. It is her play with Menezes which has led to a doubles record of 21-4 for the year, and has earned them a spot in this year’s NCAA women’s tennis Championship.
Guiding the Lord Jeffs to their third consecutive outright NESCAC Championship is head coach Jackie Bagwell. In her 16th season, Bagwell led her team to a 14-4 record while receiving an automatic team bid for the NCAA Tournament while placing two players in the singles and doubles NCAA tournament.
With a first-round bye in the NCAA Division III Tournament, the women will face the winner of the Plymouth State-St. Lawrence matchup. Amherst will host the tournament through the third round of play.
