SOUTH HADLEY, MA – The third-seeded Amherst College women’s tennis team shut out the sixth-seeded Bantams of Trinity College this afternoon at an indoor facility on the campus of Mt. Holyoke College. Poor weather conditions forced host Amherst to move day one of the NESCAC Tournament off site.
Amherst jumped out to a commanding 3-0 lead after three quick doubles matches. The Lord Jeffs entered the quarterfinal round fresh off an April 22, 2007 win against the Bantams, taking the match 8-1 at Trinity. Senior co-captain Katie Hudson (Los Altos, CA) paired with first-year Jill Wexler (Beverly, MA) to form a solid #2 doubles team that would cruise to an 8-0 victory.
Playing in front of the largest crowd of the day, Hudson earned a second team point in the Amherst effort as she defeated her counterpart 6-2, 6-1.
Amherst needed only a pair of wins to complete the 5-0 victory, and would pick up the final point from number two seed, Brittany Berckes (Secaucas, NJ). Berckes won her match 6-1, 6-2 to close the match.
Juniors Monica Snyder (Newton, MA) and Jen Murphy (Simsbury, CT) each took their first sets and were winning 3-0 and 4-0, respectively, in the second set when Amherst sealed the decision-based result.
Amherst advances to the NESCAC Tournament semifinal round to face second-seeded Bowdoin College tomorrow afternoon. Play is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at Amherst College, but should rain force play inside, the match will begin following the men’s semifinals and the first women’s semifinal (approximately 4 p.m.).
