HARTFORD, CT – The Amherst College women’s tennis team concluded its regular season with an 8-1 victory over Trinity College, improving the Lord Jeffs to 11-4 overall and 4-1 in the NESCAC. Amherst will host this year’s NESCAC Championship Tournament, which begins Friday, Apr. 27 and concludes on Sunday.
None of Amherst’s doubles pairs allowed more than four points in their respective matches, as the Jeffs held a 3-0 advantage heading into singles play. Junior Alicia Menezes (Staten Island, NY) was edged in the first singles match after three sets, but the rest of the Amherst squad cruised to straight-set wins. First-year Brittany Berckes (Secaucus, NJ) was involved in a tight first set in the No. 2 singles spot, but came out on top with a 7-6 (7-5) set victory before cruising to a 6-0 win in the second set.
The Jeffs will start preparing for the upcoming NESCAC Championship Tournament knowing that they have the potential to compete with anyone. Amherst posted a 4-1 conference record this spring, with its only loss coming in extremely close fashion to the second-ranked team in the country, Middlebury College.
The Lord Jeffs were ranked fifth in the nation in the latest Fila Rankings, but since then have upset third-ranked Williams College and defeated Wellesley and Trinity colleges, which may give Amherst one last boost in the national rankings before the conference tournament begins. Six teams will be selected for the NESCAC tournament, with the top two teams earning first-round byes.
