AMHERST, MA - The Amherst College women’s tennis team cruised to a decisive 9-0 victory over visiting Wellesley College this afternoon. Coming off a huge win over Williams on Wednesday, the Jeffs carried the momentum over for a clean sweep, despite the absence of junior Monica Snyder (Newton, MA) due to an ankle injury. The win moves the Jeffs to 8-4 on the season.

Having not played outdoors since March 28th against Wesleyan, the Jeffs had no trouble making the transition from indoors. Amherst was hot from the beginning, setting the pace with a 3-0 doubles sweep.

The first team of junior Alicia Menezes (Staten Island, NY) and first-year Brittany Berckes (Secaucus, NJ) continued their strong play with an 8-4 victory. At the second spot, senior Katie Hudson (Los Altos, CA) and first-year Jill Wexler (Beverly, MA) won 8-6. Wexler stepped in for Snyder, but the duo has experience playing with each other.
Juniors Laura Stein (Rockport, ME) and Jen Murphy (Simsbury, CT) won decisively by an 8-2 score.

With Snyder out, the Murphy, Hudson, and Stein all had to move up one spot and first-year Jennifer Ouyang (Pasadena, CA) entered the lineup at the sixth spot. The Jeffs showed that they were up to the challenge, sweeping the singles matches.

The top two singles players, Menezes and Berckes continued their tough play. At the one spot Menezes defeated her opponent 6-4, 7-6 (7-2) and at two Berckes won 6-3, 6-4.Playing up at the third position, Murphy stepped up big time with a 6-2, 6-2 victory.

The closest matches of the day were at the fourth and fifth spots, as Hudson and Stein both took three sets to win. After dropping the first set 7-5, Hudson came back to win 5-7, 6-4, 10-6 (super tiebreaker). Stein after, winning the first set 7-5, dropped the second set 6-3, before being able to recover and win the third set 6-4 for the victory.

Ouyang, moving up to play number six in the lineup, overpowered her opponent in a 6-0, 6-1 victory.

Tomorrow the Jeffs will return to the courts and travel to play Trinity at 11:00 a.m. to conclude the regular season before the NESCAC tournament next weekend at Amherst.
