Amherst Upsets No. 3 Williams, 5-4
From a Williams College Release
April 18, 2007
WILLIAMSTOWN, MA - After a grueling five hours of tennis in the Lansing Chapman rink, the Amherst College women’s tennis team came away with a 5-4 upset over third-ranked Williams College in a non-conference match-up. The Lord Jeffs move to 7-4 (3-1 NESCAC) on the spring with only two matches to go before the NESCAC Championship Tournament begins.
Williams got off to a good start, as Grace Baljon and Allie Rottkamp took their match at court two by a score of 8-1, but first-year Brittany Berckes (Secaucus, NJ) and junior Alicia Menezes (Staten Island, NY) defeated Cary Gibson and Annie Schneidman at court one to even the score. With doubles points at one apiece, Ashley Parsons and Annie Hancock battled hard to take an 8-6 victory on court three and give Williams a 2-1 advantage heading into singles play.
The Ephs would run into some trouble early on in singles, as Gibson and Parsons would fall in straight sets on courts one and three, respectively, as Menezes and junior Monica Snyder (Newton, MA) each picked up wins to give the Jeffs a 3-2 lead.
On court four junior Allie Rottkamp got the Ephs a valuable point to even up the score at threes, as she took her match in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4. The tie wouldn't last long though, as Berckes won her first and third sets to give the lead back to Amherst.
Sophomore Annie Hancock kept Williams' hopes alive, as she played fiercely to gain another point for the Ephs, tying the score at 4-4. Junior Laura Stein (Rockport, ME) and Schneidman went into a third set at court six to decide the match. Both Schneidman and Stein battled hard, but Schneidman's efforts would not be enough as Stein took the set 6-1, giving Amherst the win.
The Lord Jeffs return to action Saturday for a match with Wellesley College at noon in Amherst.
