4th-Ranked Jeffs Fall to #7 Bowdoin in Close Match
April 15, 2007
BRUNSWICK, ME – The fourth-ranked Amherst College women’s tennis team dropped a close decision against fellow NESCAC and national power, No. 7 Bowdoin College on Sunday afternoon, 6-3. The loss is the fourth loss of the spring for the Lord Jeffs, equally their total from last season.
After another day of poor weather forced the match indoors, Amherst may have been rattled by unfamiliar surroundings. The Polar Bears jumped out to doubles wins in the top two matches, while the pairing of Jennifer Murphy (Simsbury, CT) and Laura Stein (Rockport, ME) stole the third point with an 8-4 win.
For just the third time this season, Amherst’s top two singles players, senior Alicia Menezes (Staten Island, NY) and Brittany Berckes (Secaucus, NJ) both dropped their solo bouts. The Lord Jeffs picked up back-to-back wins from juniors Monica Snyder (Newton, MA) and Murphy. Murphy was the only Amherst player to win both her doubles and singles match on the day.
Amherst returns to action on Wednesday, April 18 at NESCAC and Little Three archrival Williams for a mid-week match at 4:00 p.m.
