Jeffs Earn 5-4 Victory Over Tufts

MEDFORD, MA - Amherst College and Tufts University played a very competitive NESCAC women's tennis match indoors on Tuesday afternoon, with the visiting Lord Jeffs taking a 5-4 victory.

Tufts, ranked 20th in the nation, took two out of three in doubles play from fourth-ranked Amherst. The top pair of Jen Luten and Kylyn Deary battled Alicia Menezes (Staten Island, NY) and Brittany Berckes (Secaucus, NJ) into a tie-breaker that Tufts won, 7-4. The Jumbo pair of Mari Homma and Erica Miller won in the third spot by an 8-6 final. Amherst's Monica Snyder (Newton, MA) and Katie Hudson (Los Altos, CA) earned what would be a crucial team point at #2 doubles, 9-7, although Tufts had match point.

The Jeffs took four out of six singles matches to secure the victory. Luten won the #1 match over Menezes, becoming the team's career victories leader with 59. First-years Berckes and Meghan McCooey staged the longest match, with Berckes winning 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. Jeff senoir co-captain Katie Hudson won a second-set tie-breaker to take her match at #5 against Deary.

Amherst improves to 7-3 for the 2006-07 season with its fifth win in the last six matches. Tufts has now lost two straight and is 9-4.
