AMHERST, MA – The Amherst College women’s tennis team dropped a very close match to Middlebury College by a score of 5-4. The match was held at Mt. Holyoke College’s indoor courts due to the weather conditions. The teams started the match at noon, which turned into a marathon, lasting about five hours.
In a match featuring two of the top teams in the NESCAC, Amherst found itself with a 2-1 lead after doubles play. Setting the pace at the top spot, the tandem of first-year Brittany Berckes (Secaucus, NJ) and junior Alicia Menezes (Staten Island, NY) picked up an 8-3 win, while the second doubles team of junior Monica Snyder (Newton, MA) and senior Katie Hudson (Los Altos, CA) also won 8-3. Juniors Laura Stein (Rockport, ME) and Jen Murphy (Simsbury, CT) played a close match but ended up on the losing end of an 8-6 score.
Despite the confidence the Jeffs built up from the doubles matches, Middlebury proved to be too tough in singles, as Amherst was only able to salvage the second and third spots. In the second spot, Berckes continued her dominant play this season, winning 6-3, 6-1. Snyder, after a close first set, completely dominated her opponent to win 6-4, 6-0.
After straight-set victories by Middlebury at the first and fourth spots, the match came down to the final two singles matches. In the sixth spot, Stein lost the first set 6-1 but showed much fight against a tough and hard-hitting Middlebury opponent in Clare Burke. Burke proved to be too powerful, defeating Stein 6-1, 7-6.
With the match tied at 4-4, the fifth spot match of Hudson verses Emily Holick was left to determine the outcome. With everyone’s attention on her match, Hudson fought back after losing the first set to send the match to a third. Despite having the momentum and winning the first game of the third set, Holick recovered to win 6-1, 4-6, 6-2.
The Lord Jeffs return to action Tuesday, when they will travel to take on Tufts University at 4 p.m.
