Jeffs Blast Wesleyan 9-0 for Win at Home
March 28, 2007
AMHERST, MA – The Amherst College women’s tennis team easily handled Wesleyan University in their first home match of the spring season, winning 9-0. Despite the windy and cold conditions, Amherst took care of business without dropping a single set for their fourth straight victory. The win improves Amherst to 4-2 on the season and 1-0 in NESCAC play.
After five matches in sunny California, Amherst returned to a much different climate, but it did not seem to matter. With Amherst finally able to set the doubles teams after a little shuffling early in the season, the Jeffs cruised in each of the doubles contests. The tandem of first-year Brittany Berckes (Secaucus, NJ) and junior Alicia Menezes (Staten Island, NY) set the tone with an 8-1 victory in the top spot.
In singles Amherst really displayed dominance, losing only 12 games in the six matches. Senior co-captain Katie Hudson (Los Altos, CA) and junior Laura Stein (Rockport, ME) both won, 6-0, 6-0 at the 5 and 6 spots, respectively. Menezes dropped just one game in her victory over Ania Preneta, 6-1, 6-0.
Amherst returns to action Saturday April 7 against Middlebury at home for a 1 p.m. match.
