Jeffs Pick up First Win of the Spring Against Claremont

March 21, 2007

CLAREMONT, CA – The Amherst College women’s tennis team picked up their first win of the spring season this afternoon when they defeated Claremont on the campus of Pomona College. Amherst took all nine bouts of the day, and moved to 1-2 for the spring. The Jeffs will play two more matches before returning home for their conference schedule.

Amherst welcomed back junior Alicia Menezes (Brooklyn, NY) mid-week after travel complications kept the top-Lord Jeff out of the first match of the spring. Menezes partnered with first-year Brittany Berckes in the top doubles pairing to pick up an impressive 8-2 win over their opponents. The duo has proved to be particularly successful for Amherst, as they were the Division III Wilson/ITA New England Region Champions during the fall.

Amherst saw great success in the singles slate as well, picking up a 6-0 sweep in the individual matches. Despite dropping a first set to Yassie Entekhabi, 1-6, Menezes rebounded with a 7-6 (7-5 tiebreaker) second set win, and an 11-8 third set super tiebreaker victory. In the four hole, Jennifer Murphy (Simsbury, CT) dropped the second set before winning in a third set super tiebreaker as well.

Amherst will face Pomona and Redland over the next few days before returning to New England to take on a tough NESCAC slate.
