Jeffs Open Spring Slate with 6-3 Loss to Top-Ranked Emory
March 20, 2007
CLAREMONT, CA – The Amherst College women’s tennis team opened its spring slate with a 6-3 loss to top-ranked Emory University at Pomona College, marking the first of five matches the Lord Jeffs will be playing while on the West Coast. Amherst returns to action Tuesday for a match with Cal State-Fullerton.
The Jeffs opened their spring session with a bit of bad luck, as their top player could not make the first match due to inclement weather, and their third-slot player was forced to sit out due to injury. Still, Amherst gave the nation’s top team a good match, as juniors Jennifer Murphy (Simsbury, CT) and Laura Stein (Rockport, ME) picked up wins in the third and fifth slots, respectively, while first-year Brittany Berckes (Secaucus, NJ) stepped up to the No. 1 spot and lost in a very close match. Berckes paired up with classmate Jill Wexler to win the opening doubles match in convincing fashion, 8-0.
The Jeffs will look to get back closer to full strength and rebound on Tuesday against Cal State-Fullerton.
