MIDDLEBURY, VT – The Amherst College women’s soccer team moved to 7-1-1 (4-0-1 NESCAC) on the season with a 3-2 double overtime win at NESCAC rival Middlebury College on Saturday.
The game was the definition of back-and-forth perfectly, as twice during regulation Amherst scored the go-ahead goal, only to have Middlebury answer with the equalizer each time. Starting off the afternoon for Amherst was first year midfielder Meg Murphy (Springfield, MA) on a long shot off a Mary Marvel (Williamsburg, MA) set-up.
Answering back just nine minutes later was Erin Pittenger (McCall, ID) off a Kim Walker (Ridgewood, NJ) assist.
Coming out of halftime with a 2-1 lead, Amherst looked strong. In the 62nd minute, Middlebury found a way to tie the game again, when Ashley Pfaff (Charlotte, VT) finished an Erin Oliver (Essex Junction, VT) ball.
The two teams remained tied at 2-2 through the last 2 minutes of regulation, and the first overtime. In the second overtime, Amherst was pressuring the Middlebury goal, knocking one shot off the frame, before junior Katie Coffey (Florence, MA) scored her second game winner of the year, by heading in an Armstrong service.
Senior co-captain Piper Crowell (San Rafael, CA) played solid in net for the Jeffs, earning her 35th career win in net.
The Jeffs return to action when they face visiting non-conference opponent Mount Holyoke College on Thursday at 4:00 p.m.
