Jeffs Drop First Game 1-0 at Wheaton
Norton, MA – In a match-up of national powerhouses, the 13th ranked Wheaton squad handed the 18th ranked Jeffs their first loss of the season 1-0 in a hard fought game. Wheaton’s lone goal was scored in the 64th minute by junior Jenna Rabesa (Teaticket, MA), on a scorching shot under the crossbar.
The first half ended in a 0-0 score, but Wheaton dominated the run-of-play with physical defense and by winning most of the 50/50 balls leading to numerous offensive chances. The Amherst back line held strong, playing very well on the afternoon.
The tie was almost broken early in the second half, but senior co-captain Lesley Pruzansky (Saratoga, CA) held the post and was able to clear the ball off the line. With twenty minutes to go, first year forward Meg Murphy (Springfield, MA) was unable to connect solidly on a long ball down the right wing, which was the only Amherst shot in the second half. Amherst really turned on the gas from that point in, but was unable to notch the tying goal as time ran out.
Piper Crowell (San Rafael, CA) logged one save on the day, while junior Stacey Kronenburg (Belchertown, MA) and first year Abby Isaac (Larchmont, MA) combined for the shared shutout win.
Amherst takes the field again at Bowdoin Saturday at 11 a.m.
