Jeffs Stay Unbeaten with 2-2 Tie Against Tufts

September 23, 2006

AMHERST, MA – The Amherst College women’s soccer ground out a hard-fought 2-2 tie this afternoon with visiting NESCAC rival Tufts University.  The stalemate brought the Jeffs’ record to 5-0-1 (NECAC, 2-0-1) on the season, and Tufts found themselves at 0-2-2 (NESCAC, 0-1-2) at day’s end.

A gritty first half saw Amherst and Tufts locked at 0-0, but in the opening minutes of the second senior midfielder Jenny Muller (Andover, MA) threaded the needle with a nice touch pass through the Tufts defense, finding junior forward Katie Coffey (Florence, MA) for the score.  Tufts answered in the 58th minute of play when first-year forward Fanna Gamal (Albany, CA) evened the score at one apiece with a shot that split two Amherst defenders.

The 1-1 tie lasted until the 65th minute when freshman midfielder Meg Murphy (Springfield, MA) came off the bench and controlled a wayward corner kick, putting the ball off the outstretched fingers of Tufts keeper Annie Russ (Newton, MA), giving the Jeffs the late 2-1 lead.  It looked as Amherst may hold on, but with seven minutes remaining the Jumbos once again found the net on a Martha Furtek (East Falmouth, MA) shot over senior co-captain Piper Crowell’s (San Rafael, CA) head.  Both teams remained scoreless throughout the two overtime periods as the 2-2 tie became official.

Crowell logged six saves on the day, while Russ logged three of her own.

Amherst takes the field again on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. at Wheaton College.
