Jeffs Win Battle of the Bridge Over Smith

September 21, 2006

NORTHAMPTON, MA - The Amherst women's soccer side toppled Smith College Thursday afternoon in a non-conference match-up 3-1. Junior Katie Coffey (Florence, MA) scored what was the eventual game-winner in the 24th minute, as the Jeffs remain undefeated at 5-0 (2-0 NESCAC).

The Jeffs controlled the run of play for the entire game, pressing into the attacking third on a number of occasions and forcing the Smith defense to scramble. Amherst started its scoring off early, when Natalie Ferraiolo (Palo Alto, CA) hit a low shot in traffic that found the lower right corner in just the fourth minute. That location in the goal was the key for the Jeffs, when Coffey scorched another hard shot from 20 yards into the lower corner off a Meg Murphy (Springfield, MA) assist.

The Jeffs never let up, scoring their third goal just five minutes into the second stanza, when Amy Armstrong (Avon, CT) stole the ball from a Smith defender in the box and was able to poke it past the keeper. With a number of substitutes chipping in off the bench for the Amherst, the attack stayed fresh. Sophomore winger Alana Darling (Charlton, MA) rattled the crossbar with a beauty from 30-yards, but no one was home on the rebound.

Smith got on the board when junior defender Caitlyn Colman-McGaw (Manchester, CT) converted a penalty shot in the 80th minute. The Smith goal proved to be too little, too late as the Jeffs prevailed 3-1.

Once again, the goal-keeping tandem of Piper Crowell ’07 (San Rafael, CA) and Lili Ferguson ’10 (Winnetka, IL) paired for the win, as Crowell made a pair of saves, and Ferguson was un-tested in the run of play.
