Jeffs Win at Home Over Bates 3-1

September 16, 2006

AMHERST, MA – The Amherst College women’s soccer team remained undefeated as they won 3-1 against visiting NESCAC rival Bates College to improve to 3-0 on the season (2-0 NESCAC).  Bates fell to 2-1 (0-1 NESCAC) with the loss.

Stephanie Yesnik (Arlington, VA) got the scoring started for the Jeffs, finding the top right corner of the net in the 15th minute to give the Jeffs the 1-0 lead.  But the day belonged to junior forward Katie Coffey (Florence, MA) who, in the 19th minute, hit teammate Amy Armstrong (Avon, CT) at the top of the box setting up a great shot that gave the Jeffs the 2-0 lead.  Coffey wasn’t done and in the 20th minute of the first half she capitalized on a rebounded save by Bates keeper Nini Spalding (San Francisco, CA), putting in the header to widen the margin to 3-0.

The second half proved more of the same as the Jeffs continued to dictate the pace of play.  Bates finally scored in the 75th minute, cutting the lead to 3-1, but it was too little too late and Jeffs held on to win 3-1.  Amherst goalkeeper Piper Crowell (San Rafael, CA) notched seven saves on the day and Spalding turned away five shots from Amherst.

The Jeffs take the field again on Tuesday at non-conference foe Springfield College at 7 p.m.
