Jeffs Remain Unbeaten With 1-0 Win Over Visiting ECSU

September 13, 2006

Amherst, MA – The Amherst College women’s soccer team notched their second straight victory Wednesday afternoon, to improve to 2-0 on the season (1-0 NESCAC), against visiting non-conference foe Eastern Connecticut State University.  The Jeffs blanked the Warriors, who fell to 3-3 on the season, 1-0 in a dominant performance which truly belied the score.

Amherst controlled the ball for much of the first half and with five minutes left in the half sophomore forward Julia Cummings (Los Angeles, CA) capitalized on a sweet cross from fellow sophomore Stephanie Yesnik (Arlington, VA) finding the net on a one-timer and giving the Jeffs the 1-0 lead going into halftime.  The second half found the Jeffs once again controlling the ball and the pace of play.  The warriors made a bit of run with time slipping away but the Jeffs proved too tough and held on for the victory.

Amherst peppered the Warriors dual goalkeepers Megan Gloster (Agawam, MA) and Kim Church (Farmington, CT) with sixteen shots on goal compared to ECSU’s eight.  Amherst keeper Piper Crowell (San Rafael, CA) secured her first shutout of the season notching five saves while the Warriors’ keepers combined for thirteen saves.

The Jeffs return to action Saturday morning at 11:00 AM as they take on visiting NESCAC rival Bates College.
