Armstrong Leads Jeffs to 3-1 Season-Opening Win at Trinity

FROM A TRINITY COLLEGE RELEASE

September 9, 2006

HARTFORD, CT – The Amherst College women’s soccer team opened the season with an impressive 3-1 victory this afternoon at NESCAC rival Trinity College.  The Jeffs rode the stellar play of senior forward Amy Armstrong (Avon, CT), who notched her first two goals of the season, in both teams’ season and conference opener.

Armstrong put the Jeffs ahead early, scoring off a corner kick; she found the net again shortly thereafter off a nifty pass down the left sideline by sophomore Kathryn Bentley (Atherton, CA).  In the 64th minute of play, with the Jeffs leading 2-0, first year Kathy Nolan (Palo Alto, CA) found rookie midfielder Meg Murphy (Springfield, MA) in front of the net, setting up a Murphy bullet that put the Jeffs up 3-0.

In the waning minutes of play, Trinity first year Jenn Calver (Barnard, VT) capitalized on the rebound of a Taniko Nelson (Chicago, IL) shot that bounced off the post, putting the Bantams on the scoreboard.  Unfortunately for Trinity, it was too little too late as Amherst held on to preserve their first victory of the season and move to 1-0 in NESCAC play.  Senior tri-captain Piper Crowell (San Rafael, CA) finished the game with four saves and Trinity’s junior goalie Tara Finucane (Branford, CT) finished with eight.

Amherst returns to action Wednesday in their home opener against Eastern Connecticut State University at 4:30 p.m.
