Women Place 2nd at NCAA Championships
November 18, 2006
West Chester, OH - The Amherst College women’s cross country team placed second at the NCAA National Championships Saturday at Wilmington College, adding to the team’s list of great accomplishments this season. The Lord Jeffs finished one point behind the overall leader, Middlebury College, falling just short of a national title.
Amherst was led by juniors Heather Wilson (Danvers, MA) and Kim Partee (Brentwood, TN), who finished in seventh and 11th place, respectively, less than one minute behind the leader. Seven of the eight Lord Jeffs finished in the top 80, with 279 runners taking part in the championship from 32 Division III schools.
Of the eight Amherst runners who ran in the national championship, only Shauneen Garrahan (Fairfax Station, VT) is a senior, which should make the Lord Jeffs be a prime contender in 2007 for a national title.
In nine meets this season, the Amherst women never finished worse than second. The Jeffs took home first place at the Amherst Invite, UMASS-Dartmouth Invite, Little Three Championship, NESCAC Championships and the ECAC Championships, and finished in second place at the Tufts Invite, Open New Englands, NCAA Regional Championships, and NCAA National Championships.
