SPRINGFIELD, MA – The Amherst College cross country teams competed in the 2006 NCAA Division III Men’s and Women’s New England Regional Cross Country Championships Saturday, with the women’s team placing second overall and the men’s team placing ninth.
More than 300 women from 48 Division III schools competed in the 6k Saturday. Leading the pack and finishing in the top ten for the Amherst women’s team were junior Heather Wilson (Danvers, MA) and senior Shauneen Garrahan (Fairfax Station, VA), who finished 5th and 8th, respectively. All seven of the Amherst runners finished in the top 40, good enough to place the Lord Jeffs second overall behind Middlebury College by only five points. Amherst finished 23 points ahead of the third-place team, Williams College.
More than 300 men from 45 Division III schools competed in the 8k Saturday. Although the Amherst men’s team did not place as well as the women’s team, they still finished in a respectable ninth place, led by first-year Daniel Murner (Crestwood, KY), who finished 19th overall. Sophomore Harrison Lakehomer (Eugene, OR) and junior Tomas Morrissey (Astoria, OR) also placed among the top 50, finishing 36th and 44th, respectively. Williams College dominated the men’s side, placing 68 points ahead of second-place Bowdoin College.
