Amherst Runs Strong at Open New Englands

October 8, 2006

BOSTON – Senior All-America co-captain Shauneen Garrahan (Fairfax Station, VA) captured fourth place individually to lead the Amherst College women’s cross country team to a second-place finish at the Open New Englands in Boston's Franklin Park Saturday.  The Amherst men, led by sophomore Harrison Lakehomer (Eugene, OR), placed 17th as a team.

The meet, featuring schools from NCAA Divisions I, II and III, showed the deepest field Amherst will see this season. The women finished a mere nine points behind the overall leader and well ahead of other Division III schools.

The men's side finished fifth among Division III schools, led by Lakehomer’s career best 25 minutes, 28 seconds, placing him seventh among Division III runners on the day.  Senior co-captain Cooper Knowlton (Montclair, NJ) and first-year Daniel Murner (Crestwood, KY) also came in under the 26-minute mark with times of 25:55 and 25:58, respectively.

The Amherst junior varsity teams fared well: the women finished first overall, and the men finished seventh overall and second among Division III schools.

Both squads return to action Saturday, Oct. 21 to host the Little Three Championship.
