Women Win, Men Finish Fourth at UMass-Dartmouth
September 16, 2006
AMHERST, MA - Senior co-captain Shauneen Garrahan (Fairfax Station, VA) finished second overall to lead the women’s team to its second invitational race win in as many weeks. The Amherst men's side finished fourth out of the 29 teams competing in the Shriner’s Cross Country Invitational at UMass-Dartmouth on Saturday.
In the men’s race, Amherst failed to place in the top ten, but junior Tomas Morrissey (Astoria, OR) finished an impressive 13th individually in a field of 196 runners. In one of its first collegiate races, the men’s first-year class all ran together in the junior varsity division, and left the competition in the dust. The team ran away with the team title and six of the top eight times, including a one-two-three finish by rookies Daniel Murner (Crestwood, KY), Jimmy Swanson (New Orleans, LA) and William Bell (Silver Spring, MD).
Both squads return to action next Saturday, Sept. 23 at the Tufts University Invitational.
