Jeffs Lose Heartbreaker to Visiting Bantams 6-3
April 10, 2007
AMHERST, MA – The Amherst College men's tennis team dropped its second consecutive match for the first time all year, losing a heartbreaker to Trinity at home 6-3. Amherst lost a trio of singles bouts in three sets to drop the dual match.
After a very close set of doubles matches, Trinity held a 2-1 advantage, taking wins in the first and third seeded match-ups. The pairing of Geoff Schwartz (Dallas, TX) and Jeff Wan (Staten Island, NY) defeated their opponent in a surprisingly efficient 8-4 match in the middle slate.
Wan and senior co-captain Karti Subramanian (Bethesda, MD) won important matches in the four and five seed singles slates to put Amherst back in position for a win. With number top-seeded sophomore Zach Lerner (Scarsdale, NY) and the third-seeded Schwartz each winning their first sets, Amherst was primed to take four singles matches and the overall win.
Schwartz and Lerner were unable to hold on in their matches, each losing in three sets, with Schwartz by a heartbreaking 2-6, 7-5, 7-5 result.
The loss drops Amherst to 8-3 for the 2006-07 season, and 2-2 in NESCAC play this spring. Amherst will return to action when the Jeffs face Colby on Saturday in Maine.
