Amherst Takes Aim at Cardinals

October 19 , 2006

Amherst College vs. Wesleyan University
October 21, 2006 * Andrus Field
Middletown, CT * 1 p.m.

THE SERIES
Amherst holds a 61-41-9 series edge over Wesleyan and has dominated as of late, outscoring the Cardinals 116 to 3 in the past three match-ups and winning 11 of the last 12 meetings.  The Little Three rivalry dates back to 1882, when Wesleyan won 6-4, beginning a five-game winning streak against Amherst to open up the rivalry. A winner has emerged in overtime only once, when Amherst came out on top 34-28 in 1998.

SCOUTING AMHERST
Coming off a decisive 38-3 win over Colby, Amherst stands tied for second place in the NESCAC at 3-1.  Leading the charge for Amherst against the White Mules was senior quarterback Nick Kehoe, who was named the NESCAC Offensive player of the week after passing for a career-high 330 yards while recording three touchdowns in the air on 21-of-31 passes. Entering today’s game, the Jeffs are ranked first in the country in points allowed per game with 5.8, and have yet to surrender a touchdown pass. Senior quad-captain Brendan McKee has been solid on defense, entering today’s game third on the team in tackles with 26 and leading the team in sacks with 3.5.

SCOUTING WESLEYAN
The Cardinals are coming off a 17-14 overtime win at Bates College, but have yet to string together a pair of wins this season, alternating wins and losses since their season-opening loss to Middlebury College.  Wesleyan enters today’s game standing alone in sixth place in the NESCAC at 2-2.  Senior running back and tri-captain Phil Banks has provided most of the offense this season with a team-leading three touchdowns, including the lone touchdown in Wesleyan’s 7-0 victory over Hamilton and another in the Cardinals’ victory over Bates.

LAST MEETING
In the last meeting between the Jeffs and Cardinals, Amherst rolled to a 37-0 blowout homecoming victory over visiting NESCAC and Little Three rival Wesleyan. The Jeff defense was spectacular, forcing four Wesleyan turnovers, racking up seven sacks and holding the Cardinals to just two yards rushing. Amherst dominated the line of scrimmage all day, piling up 533 yards and holding the Cardinals to just 92 yards of total offense as the Jeffs won their third straight game of the season and improved to 4-1, while Wesleyan remained winless at 0-5.
