Amherst Looks for Third Win Against Colby

October 10 , 2006

Amherst College (2-1) vs. Colby College (1-2)
October 14, 2006 * Pratt Field
Amherst, MA * 1 p.m.

THE SERIES
Since first challenging the White Mules in 1903, the Jeffs have claimed eight shutout wins against them.  Amherst holds a 24-4-1 advantage overall, emerging victorious from all 10 games since 1996. Colby last tasted victory against Amherst (27-15) in 1995 in Waterville, Maine.

SCOUTING AMHERST
The Amherst College football team has been very dangerous at times through the first three weeks of the season, as they sit at 2-1 after last week’s loss to Middlebury College. The Jeffs have enjoyed senior leadership all over the field, as senior quad-captains Nick Kehoe and Mark Hannon have played well offensively, while Brendan McKee and Mike Salerno have paced the defense. Kehoe has passed for 607 yards through the first three weeks, and has thrown three touchdowns. Hannon is currently second in the NESCAC in all-purpose yards per game, averaging 129.7 yards per effort.

McKee and Salerno have lifted the Jeffs to a NESCAC leading total defense that lets up a mere 202.3 yards per game. McKee is third in the NESCAC in sacks on the season with 3.5. Salerno anchors a secondary that is first in the NESCAC in pass defense, as the unit gives up only 136 yards-per-game, and has let up no touchdowns through the air thus far.

COLBY head coach ED MESTIERI
After leading Colby College to an impressive 7-1 overall record in 2005, Ed Mestieri was named the Division II/III Coach of the Year by the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston. Mestieri led his team to the Colby-Bates-Bowdoin Championship in his first two years as head coach, combining for an overall record of 13-3.  Prior to becoming the head coach, Mestieri had served as an offensive coordinator, offensive line coach and recruiting coordinator for the White Mules. During Mestieri's association with the Colby program, the Mules have amassed a 82-63-1 record and have won or shared 14 CBB titles.
Mestieri came to Colby from Norwich University in Vermont, where he was offensive coordinator and line coach for the football team, and coach of men's and women's outdoor track and field. Prior to Norwich, he was assistant backfield coach at Dartmouth College and assistant defensive line and linebacker coach at Kent State University in Ohio. A native of Wareham, Mass., Mestieri is a graduate of Springfield College, where he played varsity football for four years. He lives in Fairfield, Maine, with his family.
