Jeffs Avenge Loss to Williams, Advance to NESCAC Semifinals

October 29, 2006

WILLIAMSTOWN, MA – The Amherst College field hockey team set aside Saturday's 5-1 loss to NESCAC archrival Williams College - and its sixth seed in the conference tournament - this afternoon when it traveled to Billsville for a rematch. The Jeffs emerged victorious, upsetting the third-seeded Ephs 1-0 to advance to next weekend’s NESCAC semifinal.

Amherst handed Williams a five-goal lead in the first half Saturday, but came out of halftime with a new energy, scoring its lone goal while holding the high-powered Eph attack scoreless in the second stanza. Saturday's late-game success translated into momentum, and the Jeffs pulled up in Williamstown firing on all cylinders. Amherst put up a wall against the vaunted Williams offense - the game remained scoreless through the first half. The 11-4 shot count and 8-2 penalty corner tally favored Williams, but Amherst controlled the ball for much of the time.

Amherst first-year forward Molly Malloy (Stamford, CT) found a hole and attacked, cracking the day's only goal off an assist from junior Christina Porcaro (Pelham, NY) with only 2:25 left in the game. With the redeeming win, Amherst knocked Williams out of the tournament, and will advance to the conference semifinals Bowdoin College next weekend.

In the NESCAC semifinal, Amherst will play a NESCAC opponent still to be determined. Check the Amherst Athletics website at for updates on times and opponents.
