First-year Molly Malloy scored the only two goals of the game in the Jeffs' 2-0 win over Conn. College.

Amherst Shuts Out Conn. College for Fifth Win in a Row

October 24, 2006

NEW LONDON, CT – The Amherst College field hockey team moved above .500 with its fifth consecutive win; a 2-0 shutout of NESCAC rival Connecticut College. Amherst started the season 2-6 before rattling off five straight wins, including shutouts in three straight mid-week games to move to 7-6. Their current mark is the first time since September 16, 2006 that the squad has had a winning record.

Just seven minutes into the first half of play, Amherst first-year forward Molly Malloy (Stamford, CT) punched home her team-leading sixth goal of the season. Malloy was unassisted on the goal, as Amherst dominated the first half of play. Amherst saw great play on each end of the field in the first half, and took the 1-0 lead into halftime, thrilled with the momentum they continue to build.

The Camels shot out of halftime with renewed energy, and the second half was not as one-sided as the first. Both teams pushed their attacks, with the Camels looking to equalize while the Jeffs hoped for some insurance.

Amherst found what it was in search of with 14 minutes remaining in the game, when junior midfielder Christa Porcaro (Pelham, NY) set up a beautiful one-timer for Malloy’s seventh goal of the season, securing the victory for the Jeffs.

Amherst out-shot the Camels 8-6 but lost the corner battle 17-6. Lord Jeff sophomore goalie Jane Mostue (Lincoln, MA) posted her third shutout in as many weeks, and is 5-0 as a starter this season. Jamie Sheahan (South Burlington, VT) made six saves for the Camels, matching the half dozen that Mostue turned away.
The Jeffs return to action Saturday when they will face NESCAC archrival Williams College at 11:00 a.m. on Hitchcock Field.
