October 21, 2006

MIDDLETOWN, CT – The Amherst College field hockey team moves to 6-6 (2-5 NESCAC) on the season with their fourth straight win, coming from behind to beat Little Three archrival Wesleyan University, 2-1. Amherst College was lifted to victory when junior Christa Porcaro (Pelham, NY) scored an unassisted goal with 5:57 left in overtime.

Wesleyan took a 1-0 lead with 9:12 left in the first half when Amanda Nickels (Wilder, VT) scored an unassisted goal. The game was very evenly matched throughout, but the Cardinals went into halftime with the lead.

Amherst first year Molly Malloy (Stamford, CT) scored her team leading fifth goal of the year with 23:44 left in regulation to tie up the game. Both teams pushed hard in the second half, but neither goalie seemed as though they would give up another score. Amherst keeper Jane Mostue (Lincoln, MA) turned away 9 Cardinal shots on the day, in what would eventually be her fourth straight win as a starter.

The back and forth action continued as the final whistle blew, as the game moved into overtime. Today’s game was the sixth time Amherst has needed extra frames this season. Amherst was out-shot on the day 10-7, but was able to punch the ball home when it mattered most. Porcaro slapped home the winner to move the Jeffs to .500, dropping the Cardinals to 6-7 (3-5 NESCAC).
The Jeffs return to action Tuesday when they will travel to New London, Conn. for a NESCAC match-up with Connecticut College.  The start time is set for 4:00 p.m.
