Jeffs Beat Colby in Overtime, 3-2

October 14, 2006

AMHERST, MA – The Amherst College field hockey team picked up its second win in a row after beating Colby College 3-2 in overtime this afternoon at Hitchcock Field. The Jeffs move to 4-6 (1-5 NESCAC) on the season, while dropping the White Mules to 3-7 (1-6 NESCAC).

Amherst struck early in the game when first-year Christina Hopkins (Montclair, NJ) scored on a penalty stroke to give the Lord Jeffs a 1-0 lead after just five minutes of play.  Fellow first-year Molly Malloy (Stamford, CT) added a goal of her own fifteen minutes later to give the Jeffs a 2-0 lead, but Colby took back the momentum before the end of the half, scoring twice in the final eight minutes to tie the game, 2-2.

Neither team could put together enough offense in the second half, as both teams went scoreless to force the game into overtime.  With 13:51 remaining in the first overtime, Malloy struck again, netting her second goal of the game on an assist by sophomore Alyssa Dudzik (Darien, CT) to give the Jeffs the 3-2 victory.  The win marks the first time on the season Amherst has been able to string together a pair of wins, giving the Jeffs much-needed momentum heading into the final stretch of the regular season.

The Jeffs return to action Wednesday when they will travel to Springfield, MA for a non-conference match-up with Western New England College.  The start time is set for 7:00 p.m.
