Jeffs Win Overtime Thriller
September 27, 2006
AMHERST, MA – After four straight halves of scoreless field hockey, junior defender Lauren Benson (Hamilton, NJ) found the back of the goal 7 minutes into the first sudden-death overtime, giving the Amherst College field hockey team a much-needed win over cross-town rival Mt. Holyoke.
Failing to capitalize on earlier scoring opportunities, the Jeffs finally broke through on a beautifully executed corner. Sophomore midfielder Alyssa Dudzik (Darien, CT) collected the ball at the top of the circle, dished right to senior co-captain Rachel Carr-Harris (Pleasentville, NY), who sent a perfect cross to Benson for the score. Amherst moves to 2-4 (NESCAC, 0-3) on the season, and Mt. Holyoke drops to 3-4.
The Jeffs again out-shot their opponents, tallying 19 chances, while the Lyons had 14, but stellar defense allowed the Jeffs to escape with the win. In the first half, first-year defender Tierney Healey (Moreland Hill, OH) made the first of her two defender saves, deftly stopping a Mt. Holyoke try off of the goal line after a Kathleen Boucher (Washington, DC) save.
Boucher, the junior goalkeeper, had an outstanding day, collecting 14 saves. Her counterpart on Mt. Holyoke, Allie Walsh, was also stellar in goal, making 17 saves, including a diving stop late in the second half on a perfectly placed drive by Carr-Harris.
Benson’s goal was her second of the season, while Carr-Harris’s assist was her first, and Dudzik collected her team-leading third assist of the year.
Amherst returns to action Saturday as they travel to Bowdoin College to take on the reigning NESCAC champion at 11:30 a.m.
