Jeffs Drop Heartbreaker 3-2 to Bates in Double OT
September 16, 2006
AMHERST, MA – The Amherst College women’s field hockey team lost an absolute heartbreaker in double overtime to visiting NESCAC rival Bates College (3-0, NESCAC 1-0), bringing their record to 1-2 on the season and 0-2 in NESCAC play.
The Jeffs looked strong in the first half, controlling the pace of play and dominating the ball. With 20:30 to go in the half emerging first-year sensation Haley Douds (South Orange, NJ) found the net off a nifty pass in traffic, from junior forward Christa Porcaro (Pelham, NY), giving Amherst the early 1-0 lead. Douds notched her second score of the game a mere four minutes later, this time on a one timer off a corner ball. These were Douds first two goals of the season.
The second half was played tough on both sides and Bates narrowed the deficit to 2-1 with a goal by junior forward Lindsey Ferguson (Barrington, RI) with 19:43 remaining. The Bobcats evened the score at two apiece when sophomore Emily Sampson (Plymouth, NH) found the net with only 5:04 remaining. The 2-2 stalemate persisted through the first overtime; halfway through the second OT Sampson secured the Bates win with the put-back off a Carolyn King (Hanover, MA) shot.
The Jeffs return to action at non-conference foe Springfield College on Wednesday at 7 p.m
