AMHERST, MA - The Amherst field hockey team earned its first win of the season on Tuesday, edging visiting local non-conference foe Smith College, 2-1. Junior forward Christa Porcaro (Pelham, NY) scored her second goal in as many games and sophomore Mary Noonan (West Roxbury, MA) notched her first goal of the season as the Jeffs improved to 1-1.

The Jeffs scored the first goal of the game with no time left in the first half on the mayhem that ensued after a penalty corner was called. Porcaro bashed home her second goal of the season in unassisted fashion on the rebound of an Amherst shot. Early in the second half, Noonan tallied Amherst’s second goal of the game when she punched home an Alyssa Dudzik (Darien, CT) rebound.

The Pioneers of Smith battled hard in the second half scoring on a penalty stroke with just under six minutes remaining in regulation, when junior Alex Janos (Hillsborough, NJ) lifted the shot to the upper left.

Amherst junior Kathleen Boucher (Washington, DC) posted three saves while fist year Margaret Winter (Purchase, NY) piled up 13 saves in a losing effort for Smith, which fell to 0-2 with the loss.

Amherst returns to action Saturday at 11 a.m. against visiting NESCAC rival Bates College.
