Jeffs Drop Season Opener at Trinity

September 9, 2006

HARTFORD, CT – The Amherst College field hockey team dropped its season and NESCAC opener on Saturday, falling at Trinity College, 4-2. Junior Christa Porcaro (Pelham, NY) and first-year Christina Hopkins (Montclair, NJ) both found the back of the net in a losing effort for the Jeffs.

Trinity had control of the run of play in the first half, taking a 3-0 lead into the break at Sheppard Field in Hartford, Conn.  First half goals for the Bantams were scored by senior co-captain Lauren Malinowki (Longmeadow, Mass.), sophomore Christine Mwararura (Helensvale, Zimbabwe), and junior forward Marisa Shutte (Allentown, Pa.).

Amherst, refusing to give up, battled back in the second stanza, starting off the scoring when junior Christa Porcaro netted her first tally of the season just 3:50 after intermission.  Trinity brought their lead back to three just 15 minutes later as first-year Carolyn Wolcott (Hamilton, Mass.) scored her first collegiate goal.  The Jeffs responded when first-year forward Christina Hopkins scored with less than 20 minutes left in regulation.  The score remained 4-2 as the Jeffs were unable to put another ball past Trinity goalkeeper Jillian Fraker (Nantucket, Mass.), who had 12 saves on the day, as her Amherst counterpart Kathleen Boucher (Washington, D.C.) turned away a trio of Bantam shots.

Amherst returns to action Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. against visiting non-conference foe Smith College.
