Jeffs Split at NESCAC Quad

MIDDLETOWN, CT - The Amherst College volleyball team secured the No. 7 seed in next weekend's NESCAC Tournament, to be hosted by top-seeded Colby College, with a 1-1 showing at a NESCAC Quad, held at Wesleyan University over the weekend. The Jeffs topped Wesleyan on Friday night, 23-20, 30-18, 30-11, 30-27, before falling to Connecticut College, 30-27, 32-30, 30-28, on Saturday afternoon.

Sophomore Jaclyn DeMais (Hillsdale, NJ) and junior Kristin Quinn (Pacific Palisades, CA) led the Jeff attack Friday night, notching 14 and 13 kills, respectively. DeMais added nine digs, while Quinn chipped in five blocks. Rookie setter Sara Heller (La Canada, CA) posted 30 assists and five blocks, while sophomore libero Julie Berkley (Fullerton, CA) contributed six service aces and 10 digs and senior tri-captain Kate Raddock (Stamford, CT) had 13 digs.

Quinn led the way for Amherst again on Saturday, tallying 13 kills and posting a sparkling .590 hitting percentage, while DeMais added 10 kills and 15 digs. Sophomore Whitney Kouvaris (Jacksonville, FL) notched nine kills and four digs and Heller contributed 29 assists, eight digs and two blocks.

Five teams tied for third place in the final regular-season conference standings with identical 6-4 records. After all tiebreakers were exhausted and lots were drawn to determine berths, the Jeffs were awarded the seventh seed in the NESCAC Postseason Championship Tournament. They will travel to top-seeded host Colby College next weekend, where they will square off against second-seeded Tufts University on Friday at 6 p.m. in the first round of tournament action.
