Jeffs Top Endicott, 3-1, Suffer Narrow 3-2 Loss to MIT

AMHERST, MA - The Amherst College volleyball team downed non-conference foe Endicott College, 3-1, on Friday night in pool play at the Hall of Fame Volleyball Classic, while MIT blanked Bates College, 30-22, 30-23, 30-21, in other pool play action. Amherst then suffered a narrow 3-2 loss to MIT in the second round of match-ups, while Endicott swept Bates, 30-24, 30-25, 30-17.

Amherst got off to a slow start against Endicott, tallying 12 attack errors in the opening game en route to a 30-24 loss. However, the Jeffs rallied, taking the following three games, 30-21, 30-23, 30-26. Junior Kristin Quinn (Pacific Palisades, CA) notched 18 kills on a scorching .500 hitting percentage to lead the way, while red-hot sophomore Jaclyn DeMais (Hillsdale, NJ) tallied a team-best 19 kills, 17 digs and five service aces. Sophomore Whitney Kouvaris (Jacksonville, FL) joined them in double-digits with 14 kills, rookie setter Sara Heller (La Canada, CA) dished out 51 assists and sophomore Julie Berkley (Fullerton, CA) racked up 15 digs.

Junior Sara Moore (Guilford, CT) paced Endicott with 12 kills, while sophomore Meghan Hall (Santa Cruz, CA) dealt 33 assists and first-year Brittany Nolan (Monroe, CT) chipped in 20 digs.

The Jeffs returned to the court just a half-hour later for the second round of pool play, in which they dropped a five-game marathon to MIT, 30-25, 21-30, 27-30, 30-25, 15-8. DeMais led the way for the Jeffs, tallying 15 kills, 20 digs, two blocks and an ace, while Quinn added 13 kills, five digs, four blocks and two aces. Kouvaris and senior tri-captain Natalie Soud (Jacksonville, FL) posted seven kills apiece, while rookie Hannah Wirth (Pacific Palisades, CA) added six kills and six blocks. Heller posted 46 assists, Berkley and and senior tri-captain Kate Raddock (Stamford, CT) combined for 43 digs to lead the defense.

Junior Frances Rogoz (Lincolnwood, IL) led MIT, notching 18 kills, while classmate Briana Stephenson (Columbia, MD) and senior Caroline Jordan (Los Altos Hills, CA) joined her in double figures with 13 and 15, respectively. Senior setter Austin Zimmerman (Scottsdale, AZ) tallied 51 assists and 13 digs, while classmate Arlis Reynolds (Costa Mesa, CA) added 23 digs to lead the defense.

The Jeffs moved to 14-8 on the season, while MIT improved to 25-5 and Bates and Endicott moved to 5-20 and 18-10, respectively.
