BRUNSWICK, ME - Amherst College senior co-captain Kristen Raverta (West Springfield, MA) teamed with sophomore Alicia Menezes (Staten Island, NY) to win the doubles title at the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) New England Women's Tennis Championships, hosted by Bowdoin College over the weekend. Raverta also reached the final of the singles draw, where she fell to Middlebury College's top-seeded Amy Roche.
Menezes and Raverta, unseeded in the doubles tournament, cruised past Connecticut College's Holly Bawden and Danielle Coleman, 8-1, before posting a similarly convincing victory over Wellesley's Trish Devine and Jen Schwarzkoff, 8-2, in the quarterfinals. They rolled in the semifinals, defeating Williams's Cary Gibson and Annie Hancock, 8-2 and then disposed of Roche and Middlebury teammate, 8-6, in the championship match. Amherst sophomore Jen Murphy (Simsbury, CT) teamed with classmate Monica Snyder (Newton, MA) to beat Bates' Caryn Benisch and Liz Currie, 8-3 in first-round doubles action, before bowing out in the second round.
Second-seeded Raverta bested Wellesley's Devine in her first singles match, 7-5, 6-0, before defeating Colby's Gretchen Hackman, 6-1, 6-2 in the second round and Williams' Hancock, 6-3, 6-4 in the round of 16. She breezed through the quarterfinals, beating Bowdoin's Kristen Raymond, 6-3, 6-2, and then topped Wellesley's third-seeded Jenna Mezin in the semifinals, before being edged by Roche in the final. Menezes, who won this event as a rookie last year, bowed out in the quarterfinals, while Murphy reached the round of 16 and Snyder fell in the second round.
Amherst returns to action Sunday at 9:30 a.m. against visiting NESCAC rival Bowdoin College.
