Jeffs Fall to 18th-Ranked Bowdoin, 1-0
October 1, 2005
AMHERST, MA - The Amherst College women's soccer team fell to visiting 18th-ranked NESCAC rival Bowdoin College on Saturday, 1-0. The Jeffs fall to 3-3-1 (2-2-0 NESCAC) on the season, while the Polar Bears improve to 6-1-0 (3-1-0 NESCAC).
Bowdoin scored the game's only goal at the 22:39-mark, as sophomore midfielder Ann Zeigler (Washington, DC) found a loose ball inside the Jeffs eighteen-yard-box and fired a shot on net. Amherst junior goalkeeper Piper Crowell (San Rafael, CA) was able to get a fingertip on the ball with a desperation dive, but didn't manage to deflect it enough to prevent the score. The Jeffs battled for the rest of the half, but couldn't put a ball past Bowdoin senior goalkeeper Anna Shappell (Cape Elizabeth, ME) and the score remained 1-0 heading into the break.
Amherst turned up the heat in the second stanza, firing 13 second-half shots, but didn't find the back of the net, despite several legitimate scoring opportunities. The Jeffs outshot the Polar Bears 20-9 on the day, but Shappell finished with five saves to notch her third shutout of the year. Crowell finished with three saves in a losing effort.
Amherst returns to action next Saturday at noon against visiting NESCAC rival Middlebury College.
